Traveling hasn’t been a huge part of my adulthood. Of course, I did the occasional Miami, New York, and D.C. trips and anything in between, however, I wasn’t jet-setting across the country, let alone globally. Add these 6 powerful reasons you need to travel: a healthier you as part of your self-care routine.

There’s never enough time to commit to creating a plan to travel, yet with that staggering figure above, time indeed existed. However, when I did travel, I returned feeling renewed and ready to work. It made me happier. The question is why aren’t we traveling more?

Our work culture of this era has turned each one of us into a martyr. Where did that belief come from? Attempting to prove our worth is severely affecting our mental health.

Self-proclaimed work martyrs are less likely (79% to 84%) to report receiving a raise or bonus than those who do not subscribe to the work martyr myth.

When it comes to promotions, they are no more likely to have received a promotion than the average worker (28% to 28%), showing that the work martyr attitude is not helping anyone get ahead. Stop being a work martyr, no one cares, and you’re killing yourself slowly with additional useless stress both at home and at the workplace.

1. More Productive

When we take more vacations, we’re actually more productive. We are well-rested and recharged. Often, we’re running on empty. Pouring from an empty glass is hard.

In a CBS News article it reports, “Happy workers are 12 percent more productive, while another found well-rested employees perform better.”

In fact, today’s stressful workplace is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S., where workplace-related health care costs rival the $174 billion spent each year on diabetes care.

When you don’t take the necessary downtime to collect yourself, do the things that make you happy, spend time with family and friends, you’re actually slowly killing yourself.

However, if you often rest throughout the year, you’re adding years to your life.

2. Happier

Workers who plan their vacations are more likely to use all their time off, take more time at once, and are happier with their relationships, health, and well-being. They are happier with their companies and their jobs.

There’s nothing like the anticipation of a trip. It’s like being a kid again and waiting for summer vacation or your favorite holiday to arrive. It boosts your mood and gives you something to look forward to.

Traveling allows us to break our routine. Life can become mundane. Therefore, new experiences, new places, and meeting new people energizes us. It reconnects us with the external world and opens up our world view.

3. Education

I’ve tried and learned many new things abroad that it’s turned me into the best conversationalist ever! In Thailand, you can learn how to make a three-course traditional Thai meal. I also learned how to ride a motorbike there as well.

While in Indonesia, I learned new meditation techniques. In Vietnam, I learned about the culture and the local people. Learning new things keeps our brains active, which then correlates to increased levels of happiness.

4. Self-Confidence

Traveling helps to improve our self-confidence. When I traveled and lived throughout Thailand, there were many elements that I had to navigate.

You have to navigate the language barrier, transportation, food, excursions, etc. When you’re home, this isn’t something that you’re being tested on daily. It’s easy to go from point A to point Z without thinking, however, in a different country, it’s another story.

Unexpected situations may happen. Such as the time we got kicked out of a Uber when a Thai driver refused to drive us to our next location with all of our luggage.

Your confidence increases as a result when you’ve successfully navigated an environment that is completely different from yours. It makes you feel as if you can go to the ends of the Earth and back.

5. Patience

We need tons of patience when traveling. In America, we’re constantly on the go and everything we want we can have easily. Immediate gratification is almost the way of life here. However, once you arrive in another country, it’s a whole new ballgame. Those three meals that you wanted off the menu, they don’t have it.

The whole island has a blackout which is going to last six hours, deal with it. The Internet isn’t working, so what. It’s a 45-minute walk to the nearest convenience store, let’s go.

Those are actual scenarios. I had to have a lot of patience traveling abroad. The way of life is different in each country. Having more patience allows you to deal with stress but also helps you to have a more enjoyable experience.

Stressful situations are inevitable, however, how you deal and respond to them is key. Taking a little more patience back home with you adds to your life, it doesn’t take it away.

6. Gratitude

Traveling to various parts of the world gives us an opportunity to witness different ways that people live and connect with each other. Qali Id discusses on Pop Sugar her visit to Malawi. Even at the tender age of 8 years old, it taught her humility.

Qali Id was able to see groups of people live vastly different from her and still filled with joy. Traveling also taught her about bonding and sharing. While living in Thailand, my motorbike broke down. Strangers helped me to navigate where to buy the parts. They also fixed my bike!

I also, recall falling off of my motorbike, and within seconds locals swarmed me. They wanted to make sure that I wasn’t hurt. Traveling allows you to break away from sometimes the narrow mindset that we have and reconnect with humanity. You will have a greater sense of gratitude for almost everything in your life when you return home.

Take your family with you, your friends, or leave them behind. It doesn’t matter what you decide, the point is to go. Listen, you don’t even have to plan one big trip; a few short trips throughout the year is a start.

Once you start traveling, you’re going to catch the travel bug. Go ahead and get bitten.
